Kaitiakitanga Day
Matangi Primary had a successful Kaitiakitanga day for Term 1 with the focus on making tracking tunnels, so the school can be part of the Predator Free New Zealand movement. The day started with an assembly led by the Enviro leaders which ensured that all classes understood what tracking tunnels were, why they are important and how to make them. The leaders did a great job of being organised and motivating the classes. Each class made their own tracking tunnels, using milk bottles and corflute designs and covered them with camouflage and identified a suitable place for them. Another motivating factor was having a central ‘job list’ and incentive of ice blocks for the class that completed the most jobs. Classes were very competitive trying to complete as many jobs as possible! Congratulations to Kahikatea 3. In addition to making the tracking tunnels, the Enviro leaders planted seedlings in the vegetable gardens; all students planted vegetable seeds in a pot to go in the school growing tunnel; weeded the ngāhere and pump track area and harvested the apples off the apple tree. The school was fortunate to have parent help from Erica and Kelly who pruned the fruit trees to make them much healthier and free of dead wood. The whole school came together at the end of the day with a slide show of photos of each class making their tunnels and completing jobs . It was a great way to reflect and celebrate what had been achieved. On Monday classes were excited to check their tracking tunnels and were able to identify mouse prints in the tunnels!
